The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Romania of Javelin Missiles and related equipment for an estimated cost of $80 million. The Government of Romania has requested to buy two hundred sixty-three (263) Javelin FGM-148F Missiles; and twenty-six (26) Javelin Light Weight Command Launch Units (LWCLU). Also included are enhanced producibility basic skills trainers; missile simulation rounds; Security Assistance Management Directorate (SAMD) technical assistance; Tactical Air Ground Missiles (TAGM) Project Office technical assistance; other associated equipment and services; and other related elements of logistics and program support. Since its induction into service in 1996, this FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank system has continually evolved, reshaping the narrative of ground combat. With recent advancements and a track record of success, the Javelin has solidified its status as a game-changer on the battlefield.Replacing the M47 Dragon anti-tank missile in US service, the Javelin’s design epitomizes efficiency and adaptability. Its fire-and-forget mechanism, driven by automatic infrared guidance, grants operators the crucial advantage of seeking cover immediately after launch. This stark departure from wire-guided systems streamlines engagements, enhancing safety and operational flexibility. Employing a top attack flight profile, it masterfully targets armored vehicles, exploiting their vulnerable top armor. With an impressive peak altitude of 150 meters in top attack mode and 60 meters in direct attack mode, coupled with a range of 2,500 meters, the Javelin delivers unmatched precision.

FGM-148F is fitted with a multi-purpose warhead (MPWH). Developed as “Spiral 2”. Its imaging infrared seeker and tandem warhead, equipped with shaped charges, ensure optimal penetration of both explosive reactive armor and base armor, guaranteeing maximum impact. The Javelin’s “soft launch arrangement” not only enhances stealth by ejecting the missile from the launcher at a safe distance but also mitigates risks associated with backblast, a crucial safety measure in combat situations. The efficiency of its deployment is underscored by the potential for a two-person team or even a single operator to effectively engage targets while staying vigilant against threats. Yet, its capability extends beyond conventional warfare, seamlessly transitioning to direct attacks against structures, close-range targets, obstructed adversaries, and even aerial threats like helicopters.

This formidable weapon has proven its mettle in over 5,000 successful engagements, marking its effectiveness and reliability in real combat scenarios. From its inaugural deployment in Iraq to its pivotal role in the Russo-Ukrainian War, where it played a significant part in neutralizing Russian armored vehicles, the Javelin has consistently demonstrated its decisive impact. As we navigate an era defined by evolving threats and complex battlefields, the FGM-148 Javelin stands as a testament to innovation and strategic superiority. Its evolution and unwavering success underscore its pivotal role in reshaping anti-tank warfare, ensuring a formidable defense for those who wield it. This groundbreaking weapon system not only safeguards our forces but also heralds a new chapter in the art of defense, where precision and adaptability reign supreme.
