Spanish Navy to Procure New Anti-ship Missile System via NATO Support and Procurement Agency

The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) will procure a new anti-ship missile and land-attack system for the Spanish Navy. The new missiles will be integrated on the new F-110 Frigates (under construction) and will replace the ageing RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles in service on the F-100 Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates as part of their Mid-Life Upgrade Programme. Through the establishment of an outline agreement, NSPA will procure the Naval Strike Missile for the Spanish Navy. The procurement will be executed via the NATO Support and Procurement Agency Ammunition Support Partnership.

The Álvaro de Bazán class is a class of Aegis combat system-equipped air defence frigates in service with the Spanish Navy. The vessels were built by Spanish shipbuilder Navantia in Ferrol, with the lead ship of the class named for Admiral Álvaro de Bazán. The ships are fitted with the United States Aegis weapons system allowing them to track hundreds of airborne targets simultaneously as part of its air defence network. The Álvaro de Bazán-class multi-role frigates are one of the few non-US warships to carry the Aegis system and its associated SPY-1D radar. The frigates are the first modern vessels of the Spanish Navy to incorporate ballistic resistant steel in the hull.

The F110 class, also known as the Bonifaz class, are a multi-purpose, anti-submarine class of Aegis combat system-fitted heavy frigates under construction for the Spanish Navy. The project is being co-developed by the Spanish Ministry of Defence and the state-owned company Navantia. The construction of the first unit started in April 2022 and are scheduled to be delivered starting in about 2025. The Naval Strike Missile is a long-range, precision strike weapon that seeks and destroys targets at sea or land at great distance. The missile travels at high subsonic speed (Mach 0.9) and has a range greater than 100 nautical miles.

The Naval Strike Missile(NSM) is an anti-ship and land-attack missile developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA). The use of composite materials is meant to give the missile sophisticated stealth capabilities. The missile will weigh slightly more than 400 kg (880 lb) and have a range of more than 185 km (115 mi; 100 nmi). Its guidance system combines GPS Aided Inertial System (GPSINS) and Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM). The NSM is able to fly over and around landmasses, travel in sea skim mode, and then make random manoeuvres in the terminal phase, making it harder to stop by enemy countermeasures.
