Indonesian Shipyard KAS Begins Work on New Presidential Guided-missile Corvette

The Indonesian Navy officially launched new presidential guided-missile corvette KRI Bung Karno-369. Batam-based private shipbuilder PT Karimun Anugrah Sejati (KAS) has begun work on a ship that will double up as transport for dignitaries such as the Indonesian president. The defense news and analysis company Janes reported that a ceremony to mark the vessel’s “first steel-cutting” and keel-laying was held on 9 June at PT KAS’s shipbuilding facilities in Batam, Indonesia. Construction of the warship began this month.

It will be known as KRI Bung Karno once it is commissioned. Sukarno or Bung Karno (born Koesno Sosrodihardjo, 6 June 1901 – 21 June 1970) was an Indonesian statesman, orator, revolutionary, and nationalist who was the first president of Indonesia, serving from 1945 to 1967. Sukarno was the leader of the Indonesian struggle for independence from the Dutch colonialists. He was a prominent leader of Indonesia’s nationalist movement during the colonial period and spent over a decade under Dutch detention until released by the invading Japanese forces in World War II.

PT. Karimun Anugrah Sejati was established on 5 November 2012 and occupies an area of 21 hectares. The shipbuilder has launched PC-40-class patrol boats and training ships for the Indonesian Navy. Engaged in the shipping, maintenance and repair industry. The certifications include ISO 9001: 2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 45001: 2018 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System), ISO 14001: 2015 (Environmental Management System). The facilities include a 4 hull area workshop equipped with an overhead crane, cutting machines, rolling machines, material and equipment storage, wheel loaders, bending machines, CNC machines, cranes, excavators, as well as docking & undocking facilities.
