Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei announces the successful testing of the A244/S Mod 3 lightweight torpedo for the Indonesian Navy. The A244/S Mod 3 (commercialised by EuroTorp) is an Italian lightweight, fire-and-forget torpedo employed for anti-submarine warfare. It can be launched from surface vessels or from aircraft, and locates the target by means of an acoustic seeker. The A244/S Mod 3 Lightweight Torpedo represents the latest upgrade of the world-wide proven A244/S family, a LWT in service with more than 16 Navies, designed to counter the threat posed by both modern conventional and nuclear submarines.

A new and more powerful propulsion battery, with an increased number of cells and an electrolyte circulation system, ensures a higher top speed and a 50% increase in the endurance of the weapon. The introduction of an electronic controller allows a variable speed propulsion with further advantages in terms of endurance and hit probability. The acoustic performance of the A244/S in very shallow waters is now supported by an Advanced Digital Signal Processor module, to counter the latest and more sophisticated torpedo countermeasures. The A244/S Mod 3 torpedo can be easily launched from any surface platform or aircraft.

Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS), named after the inventor of the ‘Torpedo’, Robert Whitehead, has been part of Finmeccanica (now Leonardo S.p.A) since 1995. The company, which mostly employs high degree-qualified engineers, with offices and premises in Livorno, Genova, Napoli and La Spezia, is fully responsible for the design, development, production, integration and customer delivery of its impressive product range. GEIE EuroTorp is a consortium formed in July 1993 by French and Italian defense companies. Member companies of GEIE EuroTorp are WASS (50%), Naval Group (previously DCNS Group), for and on behalf of DCNS (26%) and Thales (24%).
