At approximately 5:50 p.m. on July 7, 2021 a suspected tornado touched down on base. Updated 7:44 PM Wednesday, July 7, 2021. There has been no damage to any sensitive military asset or submarine. There are reports of multiple injuries and damage to multiple recreational vehicles in the base RV park, and also reports of damage to buildings and structures on the installation. Many of the injured were transported to local medical facilities for treatment. Damage assessments are ongoing and further information will be provided as it becomes available.

“While the situation here is still very dynamic, I want to thank all of our first responders and Camden County first responders for their quick actions,” said Capt. Chester Parks, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay commanding officer. “Their quick response most certainly helped.”

Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is a base of the United States Navy located adjacent to the city of St. Marys in Camden County, Georgia, on the North River in southeastern Georgia, and 38 miles (61 km) from Jacksonville, Florida. The Submarine Base is the U.S. Atlantic Fleet’s home port for U.S. Navy Fleet ballistic missile nuclear submarines capable of being armed with Trident missile nuclear weapons. This submarine base covers about 16,000 acres (6,400 hectares) of land, of which 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) are protected wetlands.
