Insitu Awarded 10.5 Million Contract to Deliver Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to US Navy and FMS Customers

Insitu Inc., Bingen, Washington, is awarded a $12,514,386 modification to previously awarded firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract. This modification increases the ceiling to provide additional air vehicles, support equipment and spares in support of the RQ-21A Blackjack Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) and ScanEagle UAS for the Navy and Foreign Military Sales customers. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

The Boeing Insitu ScanEagle is a small, long-endurance, low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) built by Insitu, a subsidiary of Boeing, and is used for reconnaissance. The ScanEagle was designed by Insitu based on the Insitu SeaScan, a commercial UAV that was intended for fish-spotting. The ScanEagle continues to receive improvements through upgrades and changes. A complete system comprises four air vehicles or AVs, a ground control station, remote video terminal, the SuperWedge launch system and Skyhook recovery system.

The Boeing Insitu RQ-21 Blackjack is an American unmanned air vehicle designed and built by Boeing Insitu to meet a United States Navy requirement for a small tactical unmanned air system (STUAS). It is a twin-boom, single-engine monoplane, designed as a supplement to the Boeing Scan Eagle. The Integrator weighs 61 kg (134 lb) and uses the same launcher and recovery system as the Scan Eagle. The RQ-21A Blackjack is designed to support the U.S. Marine Corps by providing forward reconnaissance. In Marines service, the Blackjack sometimes uses the designation MQ-21.

Insitu Inc. is an American company that designs, develops and manufactures unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Insitu was founded in the early 1990s to develop the Aerosonde concept for long-range weather reconnaissance. Insitu was acquired by long-time partner Boeing in 2008. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, and has several offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Their unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms—ScanEagle, and RQ-21A Blackjack have logged nearly 1 million operational flight hours as of February 2018.
