Royal Malaysian Air Force to Upgrade Air Surveillance Radar to Bolster Security

Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will reorganise and relocate several aircraft squadrons, as well as beginning a hunt for a new air surveillance radar. Malaysia issued a tender on 2 July for the supply, delivery, testing and commissioning of a single long-range 3D air defence radar for the Royal Malaysian Air Force. The tender, closing on 30 August, is part of RMAF efforts to recapitalise and improve its radar network.

Next year Malaysia will receive a donated TPS-77 mobile radar system from the US. The U.S. Government will provide three Lockheed Martin long-range mobile radars to Malaysia and Indonesia, as revealed by a notice of contract action dated 9 June on the US government’s System for Award Management website. This effort is to acquire up to three transportable solid-state long-range surveillance radars. These radars must be capable of simultaneously performing air surveillance and maritime surveillance missions in the South East Asia Theatre.

The TPS-77 MRR is designed for ultra-low power consumption and is the most transportable version of Lockheed Martin’s successful TPS-77 product line. The TPS-77 MRR is the latest version in Lockheed Martin’s successful product line of surveillance radars and was developed in response to the evolving needs of armed forces on the battlefield. As the radar rotates through each 360-degree scan, the system automatically adjusts to the selected mission. The design also incorporates Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology.

In 2013, ThalesRaytheonSystems (TRS) collaborated to integrate the Malaysian Air Defense Ground Environment Sector Operations Center III (MADGE) system and upgraded it with proven technologies, including the sentry system and the Ground Master 400 (GM 400) radar.
