Elbit Systems of America, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems Ltd., announced that ATMOS Iron Sabre mobile howitzer completed the U.S. Army’s 155mm Mobile Fires Platform (MFP) Shoot-Off Evaluation in early May. Participating in the U.S. Army trials are Elbit’s ATMOS 2000, BAE Systems’ Archer, Nexter’s Caesar and Yugoimport’s Nora. The howitzer that is about to be deployed at Yuma Proving Ground is fitted with the standard fire control system in use with the IDF. The trials are set to include a complete analysis of platforms and ordnance.
Elbit America’s Autonomous Truck Mounted Ordnance System, or ATMOS, is a 155mm mobile howitzer system with the enhanced range, lethality, speed and survivability required for the future. ATMOS shoots far and fast with a 52-caliber barrel compatible with all U.S. and NATO-standard rounds and ranges out to 65 kilometers, with the ability to set up in less than 30 seconds and displace in the same amount of time. The semi-autonomous loader with built-in manual dual redundant back up can deliver six rounds per minute from a chassis capable of traveling 55 miles per hour.
ATMOS further enhances the soldiers lethality and survivability through the Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) technology. As a highly modular family of systems, ATMOS can be integrated on an array of different trucks or with a range of fire control systems for complete customer optimization. Compatible with all existing US projectiles and propellant charges, it fulfills the Army’s mobile howitzer needs immediately, delivering on the modernization and capability improvements defined by U.S. Army Futures Command Long Range Precision Fires objective.
The U.S. Army aim being that of fielding a more mobile, lethal, and survivable 155 mm system to replace its current fleet of towed howitzers, being able to shoot the first round in less than 30 seconds from stop, shooting five more, and being out of action within 110 second to avoid counter-battery fire. The ATMOS Iron Sabre can be transported on board a C-17 Globemaster III, and is designed to cope with the European rail carriage system as well as with European and International bridge crossing.
