Indonesian Navy Type-209 Submarine KRI Nanggala (402) is reported missing in waters north of Bali after it missed a radio check-in. The submarine supposed to conduct a live-fire torpedo exercise this week around the waters. Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, said warships had been dispatched to find the KRI Nanggala-402 vessel. The navy subsequently sent a distress call to the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office to report the ship as missing and presumably sunk.
Indonesian Navy spokesperson First Admiral Julius Widjojono stated that a team of divers was searching for the ship. Jane’s Information Group reported that the navy had also sent a number of warships to the area. The defense ministry stated that the governments of Australia, Singapore, and India had responded to their requests for assistance. Defense Brief reported that, according to marine traffic data, the Republic of Singapore Navy’s submarine support and rescue vessel (SSRV) MV Swift Rescue appeared to be en route to the Bali Sea.

KRI Nanggala (402) is a submarine of the Indonesian Navy, one of two Cakra-class submarines. The ship is named after the Nanggala (plough), a weapon owned by Prabu Baladewa, a recurring character in wayang puppet theatre. The Indonesian Navy is expected to operate at least 8 submarines by 2024. The vessels were built by the South Korean Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DMSE) and the Indonesian PT PAL. As of 2021, six ships has been planned which were divided into two batches, batch 1 consists of three ships and all are already commissioned.
