The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has presented forty (40) armoured personnel carriers to the Ghana Armed Forces, as part of Government’s efforts to retool and equip the military. Addressing a ceremony at Burma Camp on Wednesday, 31st March 2021, President Akufo-Addo stated that since taking office in 2017, his Government has been working to satisfy the logistical and personnel needs of the Armed Forces.
The President presented thirty-three (33) Armoured Personnel Carriers, forty-one (41) assorted Toyota vehicles, three (3) water tankers, one (1) self-loading recovery truck, one (1) refrigeration van, and five (5) utility vehicles for waste disposal and management. The Ghana Armed Forces for their continued commitment to the on-going Operations CONQUERED FIST and MOTHERLAND. Ghana has ordered 30 4×4 armored vehicles in Cobra 1 and Cobra 2 versions.
The Cobra is a family of armored vehicles produced by Otokar of Turkey. It is produced in two generations. The Cobra (Turkish: Kobra) is an armoured tactical vehicle developed by Turkish firm Otokar. The monocoque steel v-hull provides protection against small arms fire, artillery shell shrapnel, and to a certain degree against anti-personnel and tank mines, and IEDs. Front wheel arches are designed to be blown away to free blast pockets.
The Cobra II, a further development of the existing Cobra, is an amoured tactical vehicle designed and produced by Turkish company Otokar. It features high level of protection against threats from improvised explosive devices, land mines. Cobra II is a 4×4 wheeled armoured vehicle and has a capacity for nine personnel including the driver and the commander. Among its various functions are security and peacekeeping operations and border protection.
