Polish Defense Company PIT-RADWAR Unveils Its Mobile VSHORAD System

Polish defense company PIT-RADWAR S.A., a member of Polish Armament Group (PGZ), has unveiled its concept of a mobile modular scalable, self-propelled VSHORAD (Very Short Range Air Defense Radar) class air/missile defence system 35 mm self-propelled gun solution has become its backbone, based on Jelcz 662 6×6 heavy utility truck and Rosomak (Patria Armored Modular Vehicle) armoured personnel carriers. The mobile is to address the modern array of air threats, such as attack helicopters, UAS, loitering munitions, or cruise missiles. The self-propelled anti-aircraft gun part of the system works in cooperation with the Poprad SHORAD missile solution, and Bystra and SoÅ‚a radars. The system may utilize both kinetic, as well as non-kinetic effectors, all domestically manufactured.

Both 35 mm self-propelled gun the dual-feed KDA 35 mm cannon, manufactured in Poland and using the Polish-made programmable ammo that is said to be especially effective in engaging small air threats, such as UAVs. The gun still retains the ability to fire sabot rounds. Not only are these an effective asset in acting against conventional airborne threats, but they can also be employed against non-armoured and lightly armoured land and naval targets. PIT-RADWAR acts as the main integrator of the anti-aircraft battery system featuring the 35 mm cannon. The company works together with HSW S.A., delivering the KDA automatic weapons, and ZM Tarnów – responsible for delivering the KDA gun control system, ammunition feed and loading system.

The SPZR Poprad VSHORAD class self-propelled anti-aircraft missile system, produced by PIT-Radwar S.A. The Poprad is designed to detect, recognize and destroy air targets at close ranges and low altitudes using 4 Grom or Piorun short-range homing missiles. The set is mounted as standard on the AMZ Å»ubr-P chassis produced by AMZ-Kutno. The Poprad set can operate as part of the classic air defense system or independently. If the set operates in the anti-aircraft defense control system, it receives the indicated targets and the command to open fire from there. Information about the radiolocation situation is transmitted to the Poprad system thanks to the VHF radio station or via wire communication. SPZR Poprad uses ZDPSR “SoÅ‚a” radar stations, which indicate targets for the Poprad set batteries.

The Grom (meaning “thunder” in Polish) is a man-portable air-defense system produced in Poland and based on the Russian man-portable infrared homing surface-to-air missile (SAM) 9K38 Igla. It consists of a 72 mm anti-aircraft missile set with a flight speed of 650 m/s, as well as a single-use launcher, re-usable gripstock and thermal battery coolant assembly electric unit. The Piorun (meaning “lightning” in Polish) is a man-portable air-defense system of Polish production, designed to destroying low-flying aircraft, airplanes, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles. The set is a deep modernization of the PPZR Grom set, therefore the second designation of the missile is GROM-M. The Grom and the Piorun portable anti-aircraft missile system is produced by the Mesko.
