The Royal Thai Army Procurement Agency will acquire 12 LG1 Mk III 105mm light towed howitzers fitted with automatic firing control. The winner of the bid is the local partner company United Defense Technology for an amount of 22,677,763 Euros. The Royal Thai army is equipped with 24 LG1 Mk II 105mm towed howitzer. The Mk III version is equipped with an inertial navigation unit used to guide, position, and aim the canon.The towed howitzer has been used by the Belgian Army, Canadian Army, Colombian National Army, Indonesian Marine Corps, Singapore Army and the Royal Thai Marine Corps.
The LG1 Mk III is a modern 105 mm towed howitzer designed and produced by GIAT Industries (now Nexter group) of France. The light towed howitzer is particularly well adapted to rapid intervention forces operating over difficult terrain. The gun is lightweight, very easy to use and is the ideal weapon for airlift, airdropping, helicopter or amphibious operations, with efficiency demonstrated during combat in Afghanistan. There is now, a new digital version of 105 LG called 105 LG1 Mk III.
The howitzers has a 30 calibre barrel and a NATO standard chamber. It can fire all ammunition compliant with the standard, especially US M1 ammunition over a standard range of more than 11 km, and Nexter Munitions “Extended Range” ammunition over a range of more than 17 km. The MK III is now on offer, with an inertial navigation unit used to guide, position and aim the canon. This system further reduces the time for getting into firing configuration. The 105 LG Mk III can be integrated into a firing control system (system C3l).
