The Turkish Company Aselsan presents new technology of railgun system under the name of Tufan. The Turkish Company shows its ability to develop that type of new weapon system. The Railgun launcher is a long-range weapon that fires projectiles using electricity instead of chemical propellants. Magnetic fields created by high electrical currents accelerate a sliding metal conductor, or armature, between two rails to launch projectiles at maximum range of 7,250 km. The new railgun system is integrated in a turret which can be used as ground-based station, but the system can be also mounted on a vessel. The Tufan railgun system can be used for direct and indirect firing operations against ground and naval targets. The system can be also used against air targets and is able to destroy missiles.

Since many years, U.S. Navy has launched a program to develop railgun weapon system. The Electromagnetic Railgun INP was initiated in 2005. The goal during Phase I, a proof-of-concept demonstration at 32 mega joule muzzle energy, has been achieved. A future weapon system at this energy level would be capable of launching a 100+ nautical mile projectile. This launch energy has the advantage of being able to stress many components to evaluate full-scale mechanical and electromagnetic forces.
